XS-1 SORA

As it has been said throughout history…all good things must come to an end.  In fall of 2015 the first and original design from SimSamurai, the XS-1 Sora, exited the taxiway for the mothball hangar.  For the time being we have pulled her from service but she will never be forgotten.  And while we are not currently offering the kit, we do still offer the DIY plan set at a reduced price.  The final goal for our XS-1 is to retrofit it to become a smaller, more compact single seat cockpit design to be called the SX-1B.  it’s larger replacement is the Airliner X which is a full foot wider than the original XS-1.

For now we will leave this page active as a testimony to her legacy.   She was unique. She was the original.

The outstanding XS-1.

The XS-1 was in fact the original SimSamurai cockpit design.  With its inception to service was born a mantra of showing the world that advanced home flight simulation can be cost effective without sacrificing quality of the environment.  She served her purposed and with it was logged many thousands of flight hours.

The XS-1 provides a very realistic cockpit feel while also retaining many useful features of a common desk such as storage shelves on each side which can be used for various charts, training manuals, DVDs, or even a coffee cup!

XS-1 PURCHASE OPTIONS

As of July 1st 2018 SimSamurai migrated to a full digital sales platform for our DIY Cockpit Plan Sets with added options for printing/shipping. We also continue to offer our normal in house fabrication services for BareBones and RTA kit cockpit enclosures and instrument panels.

In addition to this we now offer digital design cut files for our instrument panels so that you can attempt to cut them yourself, or can take the file to a local fabricator of your choice (laser or waterjet). This allows customers to save even more money over our in house costs of fabrication, labor, and shipping.  Included with each panel cut file is PDF instructions for mounting hardware and final finishing options for both the panel and glare-shield.  For a small added fee we can also custom modify the panel to better suit the needs of your current equipment and flight controls. Please see the updated Instrument Panel page for more details.

Lastly, with each digital product purchase you hereby agree to our Non-Commercial Single Use User Licensing Agreement (NCSUULA) which is detailed on the SHOP page.

ACCESSORY OPTIONS

Aluminum Instrument Panel Option ($ 320 or $ 540)**

In addition to the cockpit you can also purchase a fully customized aluminum instrument panel overlay.   You can choose to use the 3 LCDs approach like we do (with center monitor in portrait mode) or we can custom design the panel specifically to fit your personal needs. The instrument panel is 5mm (.125″) aircraft grade aluminum and is precision cut on a CNC water jet system.   For a total of $545 the top of the panel will come complete with a rubberized  dash/glare-shield.  The aluminum panel and glare shield is a great way to finish out your cockpit and make it look very  professional.

**For both BareBones and RTA kit customers the panel and glareshield option is reduced 10% if ordered along with cockpit.

Interior Window Frames with Aluminum Cap Trim Option

($ 125 per frame and up to four available)

The upper window frames are made to provide a “window-like” appearance when seated in the cockpit.  Each frame is constructed of 3/4″ Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) and are cut via C-n-C router machine.  Again, much like with the aluminum overlay panel, the upper window frame cutout sizes must be first determined by the actual monitors used by the customer.  The central window frame cutouts are determined by the exact perimeter size of the monitor (without stand) and is determined by both the exterior bezel width and height as well the exact screen width and height of just the LCD screen itself.  Once cut, the frame receives a final sanding and is then painted with a single coat of grey primer and then 2 textured topcoats in choice of medium grey or sand tan.  Also included with each window frame is the 2.5 inch front frame support and 400 grit polished 1.5″ L-channel aluminum cap for the interior face.

Real Aluminum Exterior Skin Panels Option

($ 400 for side exterior panels, $ 250 for overhead canopy)

By default, all cockpit exterior panels are made with white or black ABS plastic.  For complete RTA kit purchases the exterior is painted silver while the interior is primed white then painted in a choice of medium grey or sand tan.  You can option to have these panels made in real 20 gauge 6061 aluminum skin if desired and all holes will come pre-drilled for immediate installation.

Rolling Castor Wheels Option

($ 150 – for 14 wheels and 56 screws)

By default, both the Bare Bones and RTA kits come without wheels but include 3.5″ x 3.5″ wood standoff blocks where the wheels would typically be located. This added height is a necessity of the design for proper yoke height in relation to the pilots. Installation of 360 degree rotational castor wheels allows the entire cockpit to be more mobile if it is ever required that the cockpit be moved around or relocated.   The wheels used are high quality 3″ polyurethane wheels with lubricated ball bearings for life longevity.

BAREBONES and RTA KIT SHIPPING COSTS

Average shipping cost in USA for the base model is $350 to $400 depending on your location. Average ship weight for the XS-1 is 300 lbs.  The XS-1 will come in two large boxes regardless of purchase of the Bare Bones kit or Completed RTA kit. Once in hand you will need a small socket set and screw driver to complete the final assembly which will typically take one or two hours.

Whether you order a set of the DIY plans, or a Bare Bones kit, or even a fully completed RTA kit, we always offer free builder advice for all flight simulator cockpit customers via email or phone (during 8am-6pm USA Pacific time).  Please know that we are here to help if you need further advice or added assistance!
